Sea-level rise (SLR) is a slow but serious threat to agriculture, urban areas, ports, and coastal ecosystems. It exacerbates flooding, saltwater intrusion, and infrastructure vulnerability. To respond, we need a mix of strategies, from engineered defences to nature-based solutions, along with governance reform and legal support for affected communities. Education and integrated planning are key to addressing SLR challenges and enabling informed decision-making. Without proactive and timely adaptation, SLR risks triggering irreversible environmental, social, and economic impacts.

More and more case studies, including in the Mediterranean region, highlight the challenges facing vulnerable coastal areas, where people are already feeling the effects of rising seas. These real-world examples show that adaptation is urgent, and that solutions must be both scientifically grounded and socially just.
