As the impacts of climate change intensify, legal systems are being called upon even more frequently to take action. However, despite the existence of legal and policy frameworks that set targets, deadlines and plans at all levels of governance, climate commitments are still largely failing to be met.
Against this backdrop of climate obligation violations, alternative approaches to climate action are gaining traction. Litigation is emerging as a powerful tool for addressing the risks and impacts of climate change, with courts becoming key arenas for accountability in both the Global North and South. At the same time, participatory mechanisms such as citizens’ assemblies are enabling civil society to engage in the policymaking process and develop informed, democratic proposals. Training and knowledge dissemination also play a crucial role in bridging the gap between legal knowledge and effective action.
